The Shadow of Judas in the Hidden Mirror of the Soul, lacl.
It is one of the most accomplished scenes in cinema. With unusual subtlety, the historical icon created from the figure of Judas is revived in this passage.
Regardless of an alternative version of the story in which Judas was probably not "as much of a Judas" as the catechism portrays him, we could consider the thesis outlined by some writers and the apocryphal gospels, according to which it was Jesus who asked Judas to play the role of Judas. Such a sacrifice! Perhaps the greatest that any human being could ever bear. That is to say, Jesus asks Judas to betray and sell him out.
But the truth is that the figure of Judas, as captured in the historical parable, delicately paints that subtle evil that resides in the human soul. It is like an icon of our psyche. It is part of our shadow.
The still from the film shows Andrei Rublev's fellow monk (if I remember correctly, his name is Kirill) plotting his evil deeds. With smug cunning and reveling in his own spite, he blasphemes against his friend Andrei and his art.
